What is Mileage rates for landlords?

Last verified 4 November 2026

Mileage rates are flat amounts per business mile that can be claimed instead of the actual running costs of a vehicle. From 6 April 2026 GOV.UK gives 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a car or goods vehicle, 25p a mile after that and 24p a mile for a motorcycle.

Why it matters to landlords

The journey must be for the rental business, such as driving to a let property to meet a contractor, and a journey with a private purpose is not deductible. If an agent handles virtually all the letting work, travel from home is normally not deductible.

Use the flat rate or the actual costs for a vehicle, not both. Keep a log with the date, purpose and distance of each journey. The free mileage calculator on this site works out the claim for your miles.

Example

Fatima drives 400 business miles to her let flat in the year in her car. At 55p a mile her claim is £220.
