Do NRLA members have to use NRLA Portfolio for MTD?

Last verified 23 October 2026

No. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax needs commercial software that works with Making Tax Digital, and HMRC does not tell you which product to use. NRLA membership includes Portfolio, but nothing in membership requires you to file through it.

HMRC asks you to choose your software before you sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, and notes that free products are available for people with simple tax affairs. Pick one that covers all your income: rental income, and self-employment too if you have it.

Many members keep their NRLA membership for the advice line, documents and training, and use separate software for their records and quarterly updates. VoxaMTD needs no membership and sends quarterly updates on its free plan for up to two tenancies. VoxaMTD is not affiliated with the NRLA.
