Can I appoint an accountant to do MTD for me?

By the VoxaMTD team. Last verified 31 October 2026

Yes. An agent can sign you up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and act for you, after you give permission. The agent needs an agent services account and your authorisation before they can sign you up.

If you already authorised the agent for Self Assessment, HMRC accepts that authorisation for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. The agent checks it appears in their agent services account and adds it if it does not. If you have not authorised them, they ask you to do so through their account.

To sign you up, the agent needs your full name, date of birth and National Insurance number. For property income they also need the date you started receiving it, if that was within the last 2 tax years.

You or your agent must still submit the Self Assessment return for the tax year before you start using the service. You remain responsible for the accuracy of your records, so ask what your agent will do and what you must provide.
