When is the first MTD quarterly update due?

Last verified 23 October 2026

7 August. For people who started on 6 April 2026, the first update covered 6 April to 5 July 2026 and was due by 7 August 2026. If you start on 6 April 2027, your first update covers to 5 July 2027 and is due by 7 August 2027.

For the 2026 to 2027 tax year, the next deadlines are 7 November 2026, 7 February 2027 and 7 May 2027. Your tax return for that year is due through your software by 31 January 2028. The same pattern repeats each year, so the first update of every tax year is due on 7 August.

If your accounting period runs from 1 April to 31 March, you can choose calendar periods instead. The first period then runs from 1 April to 30 June, and the deadline is still 7 August. You must choose this before you send your first update.

For 2026 to 2027, HMRC will not give penalty points for late quarterly updates. You must still send every update before you can submit your tax return using software, and late returns and late payments can still lead to penalties.
