Can a gas safety certificate be backdated?
Last verified 23 October 2026
No. A gas safety record must show the date the check was carried out, along with the engineer's name, Gas Safe registration number and signature. If a check is overdue, book one now; the new record runs from the date of that check.
The record also has to list each appliance or flue checked and where it is, the property address, the landlord's name and address, and any safety defects with the action taken. The duty is to have the check done every year, so a record with a false date would not show when the appliances were actually checked.
The lawful way to keep the same renewal date is to have the check done up to two months before it is due. The new record then keeps the original deadline, as long as you keep it until two further checks have been completed. Give existing tenants a copy within 28 days of the check, and new tenants a copy before they move in. These HSE rules apply in Great Britain.
