Home / Glossary / Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)

What is Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)?

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rates a property's energy efficiency from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). You need a valid EPC to let a property, and tenants must be given a copy.

Why it matters to landlords

An EPC lasts 10 years. It must be available to prospective tenants, and the rating usually has to appear in adverts. You can check any property's certificate on the public register.

The rating also decides whether you meet the minimum energy efficiency standard, so a poor score can stop you letting the property until improvements are made.
