What is National Insurance number (NINO)?

A National Insurance number (NINO) is your personal reference in the UK tax and benefits system, in the format of two letters, six numbers and a final letter. Making Tax Digital uses it to identify you when software connects to HMRC.

Why it matters to landlords

When you sign up for MTD or link software to HMRC, your NINO is how HMRC matches the submissions to you. It stays the same for life.

You can find it on payslips, a P60, in your HMRC online account or the HMRC app. Your UTR is a separate number used for Self Assessment.
