What is Self Assessment?

Self Assessment is the system HMRC uses to collect Income Tax from people whose tax is not all taken at source, including landlords. You report income on a tax return and pay what you owe by 31 January after the tax year.

Why it matters to landlords

Online returns are due by 31 January after the tax year ends on 5 April. Landlords report rental profit on the property pages, called SA105.

If you are in Making Tax Digital, the final declaration replaces the return, but the payment dates stay the same. Landlords below the threshold keep filing a normal return.
