What is MTD threshold?

The MTD threshold is the level of qualifying income above which you must follow Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. It is £50,000 from 6 April 2026, £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and £20,000 from 6 April 2028.

Why it matters to landlords

The test uses gross self-employment and property income before expenses. HMRC compares it against an earlier tax return, so you normally get notice before you need to start.

If your income later drops below the threshold for a period, you may be able to leave MTD, but HMRC applies its own rules on how long it must stay below. Check gov.uk before stopping.
